RIFF 2014 FILM LINEUP

The Second Annual Rahway International Film Festival kicked off on Saturday, July 12, 2014

 

There were three blocks of original short films throughout the day. After each of the screenings, there was be a brief Q&A with our filmmakersIn addition to the film screenings, we offered a catered Artist Networking Hour. There were also two seminars led by working professionals in the film industry throughout the course of the event. To top it all off, we also hosted an outdoor street fair complete with food, a live DJ, and local vendors.

L'Amore Corto (Short Love)

Director: Valentina Vincenzini - Valentina Vincenzini received a Master’s Degree in Film, Television and Multimedia Production; and a Ph.D. in Film and Media Studies from Roma Tre University, in Rome, Italy. She moved to New York in 2013 where she shot L’Amore Corto, her first short movie, which combines her experience as an Italian abroad with her ideas on cinema, web and cross media storytelling.

 

Synopsis: Giulia and Lorenzo are two Italians at their first date, drinking an espresso in New York City. After a while, Lorenzo becomes impatient and spills the beans: he really likes Giulia but he is concerned about the little time they have together since they are in a low budget independent short film.

Director: Hannes Rall - During 1994-2005: Freelance illustrator, animator and comic book-artist in the fields of 2D animation, illustration, comics and character-design. During 2003-2005: Adjunct assistant professor at the Media University in Stuttgart, Germany. Since 2005, Assistant Professor at the School of Art, Design and Media (ADM) at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore. Since 2007, Area Coordinator Digital Animation at ADM 2011 appointment as Associate Professor (tenured).

 

Synopsis: An artistic animated short-film adapted from the famous German 'Gothic' fairy-tale 'The Cold Heart' by Wilhelm Hauff: A 'Faustian' tale in the Black Forest, the films tells the story of a young man who trades his warm heart for a cold stone in order to become rich. A magical story, which narrates his encounters with the good and evil spirits of the forest. Directed by Hannes Rall in his highly expressionistic style it also features the color-design by famous animation-designer Hans Bacher.

Director: Christian Thüringer - Christian Thüringer is an independent photographer, filmmaker and garage rocker living in Vienna, Austria. Thüringer learned to master video editing with S-VHS VCR in the 90ies, before leaving his home town to buy himself a Radiohead T-shirt and start some serious diving into the world of 3D animation, compositing and post-Nirvana music. He now lives in a historian apartment building in the north of the city together with his render farm and espresso machine, lectures on image processing, loves fast food, tracking marker, shaggy dogs and foreign rock music.

 

Synopsis: The id, the hippy, the old man, the choir boy and the hipster all agree on one thing: be yourself! “monolog” is a 14-minute short film by the young Viennese-director Christian Thüringer, who also plays all the lead roles.

Director: Sébastien Pins - Sébastien Pins was born in 1990 in Namur. Fascinated by the beauty of nature, he was early attracted by photography and as soon as his 19, he produced several documentaries that got awarded and broadcasted in several festivals. Student in the “Institut des Arts de Diffusion de Louvain la Neuve”, he is likely to produce more short films.

Director: Tracey Anarella - Jesse and the Fountain of Youth is Ms Anarella’s first film. She not only shot and directed the film but she edited the film as well. Jesse and the Fountain of Youth has won numerous awards at several film festivals. Tracey’s skills also involve licensing specifically in the areas of music synchronization rights and clearances She was responsible for all music rights in clearances being obtained for the 2012 feature film Bert and Arnie’s Guide to Friendship currently making its debut appearances in film festivals from Great Britain to New York.

 

Synopsis: “Jesse and the Fountain of Youth” features, Jesse Cohen, a subway performer who “busks” in the NY City subways. He performs his resonant song, “The Fountain of Youth” at “The Busker’s Ball” in Williamsburg, NY. The lyrics of the song serve as a continuous thread from scene to scene. We travel through the different aspects of Jesse’s life learning more about Jesse’s life, his music and why he busks. We see him negotiate the line between busking and advancing his career as an above ground performer.

Director: Yolanda Perez Centeno - Yolanda Centeno is a Spanish director with a strong background in Advertising. She moved from Spain to New York in 2012 to study and pursue a career in the film industry through an MFA in Filmmaking. She also graduated in Spain with a double degree in Filmmaking and Advertising. A few months after she graduated in Spain, she joined a production house that made documentaries and short films. During that period, she was nominated for more than 30 festivals and won awards for several short films as well as some other advertising contests. Currently she lives in Los Angeles California where she produce write and direct films and commercials.

 

Synopsis: Zugzwang in German means "obligation to move". Life and chess are not so different. There is a moment in life where you know you have to make a decision but the best thing to do would be not to make any move. But... you must. We simply call this "being screwed". In chess, they call it "Zugzwang". Pedro is a chess prodigy. But if you think he is one of those lucky happy and successful ones you couldn't be more wrong. It's not that kind of story. This is a story of a frustrated boy: no friends, no supporters, just bullies around. No lovely parents, just loneliness. No love, just hatred. Not a trace of confidence, just insecurities and complexes. There is only one thing he can control: chess. He just decided to apply all the chess techniques to get what he wants the most. But he never faced a Zugzwang before.

Director: Francesca Rizzo - Francesca Rizzo, an award-winning filmmaker and former CinewomenNY president, has taught film study and craft in NYC as well as Kean University. Her 1995 short film, Sullivan's Last Call - a sexy little film about celibacy, is used in Boston University's curriculum and she was an invited speaker at the Harvard Film Archives "The Independents" series. 

 

Synopsis: A sexy little film about celibacy laced with sly humor and a jazz score, this award-winning B&W modern noir delves deep but leaves no discernible scars. This 1995 short film is used in Boston University's film study curriculum. The film will screen at the festival as a prelude to the 1 hour seminar "Directing Your First Indie Film: Don't let directing be the last thing you think of on the first day of shooting" scheduled for Seminar #2 at 3:15PM - 4:15PM.

Director: Temilolu Tokosi - Temi is a 27 yr old Nigerian director who hails from Roselle,NJ. Throughout his life he had a extreme love for films, and he knew the distinct impact they can have on one's life, but he did not know that was going to be his career path. In 2008 while working for a security agency he met Steven Mondesir, a fellow filmmaker who took him on his independent film set, and changed his life forever! Temi then started working for Creative Control TV, being directly mentored by filmmakers Coodie & Chike. From everything he learned there, mixed in with what he learned at Montclair State Univ studying film (where he earned a degree), Temi and his team believes they have the vision to change lives through film.

 

Synopsis: After being cut from his high school basketball team last year, Nii Sowah, a senior at Roselle High School, is determined to make the team this year. With the help of his best friend, Ben, Nii is confident in his abilities this time around. However, memories from last year’s tryout still haunt him, and the pressure to give up on his dream from his overbearing mother do not help matters. With tryouts drawing near, it is up to Nii to silence the naysayers and focus on the only thing that matters, the love of the game. But will that bring him closer to making this national powerhouse team? The Will to Want is a universal story of redemption and determination that speaks to the epitome of the human spirit. In the end we must all ask ourselves, how bad do we want it?

Director: Rich Devaney - Rich Devaney was born and raised in Rahway NJ. He studied film at the School of Visual Arts in NYC. After several years in advertising Rich moved his focus to independent film. ‘Brooklyn Bound’ was his feature debut as director, writer, producer and actor. The film garnered Rich the ‘Emerging Filmmaker Award’ at the Denver IFF and premiered at Tribeca Film Festival. Since Brooklyn Bound Rich has worked as an editor, writer, and acting teacher. With his partner, Valerie Corrales, Rich has launched RICH D FILMS. ‘PATROL’ is the first film produced by RICH D FILMS and is representative of films to come.

 

Synopsis: When two NYPD patrolmen are called to assist a drunk and disorderly woman at 3:00 am, their actions conflict with the oath they vowed to keep; to protect and serve the citizens of New York City. Based on actual events.

Director: Edward Kruglik - Edward Kruglik was born on June 28, 1975 in Minsk, Belarus. His family came to America in 1980 when he was just 5 years old. Edward's love of film made him want to get into the film industry, so he attended The Film and Radio Institute where he was mentored by Sam Borowski. Edward's first project was producing a short film titled "Maniac" that was directed by Sam Borowski, starring Bill Sorvino. "STRAIGHT" is Edward's first film in which he executive produces, directs and wrote. Edward says he has met some great people in the industry, and is happy with the direction his work is going.

 

Synopsis: A young couple, Veronica (Deanna Henson) and Alex (Michael Wolfe) battle their demons in the drug fueled lifestyle that they're living. Veronica decides that she has had enough of the copping, the stealing, the lying, and just wants to get her life straight.

Director: Daniel Clements  |  Producer/Writer: Tadhg McMahon - Daniel Thomas Neal Clements was born and raised in Oshawa, ON, Canada. His first film was made at the age of 6, which was done by removing the television from the TV stand, using the platform as a stage, and filming a paper bag puppet show. Since then, he has graduated from Sheridan College with an Advanced Diploma in Media Arts, and York University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Film. He has been working professionally in the film and television industry since he was 17 and has successfully executed almost every professional position in almost every industry department. His films have been all over the world, have sold for distribution, have won numerous awards and have premiered at A-List, ©Academy Award Qualifying Film Festivals. “Shooting Oliver” is his latest directorial offering, which is one of his last short projects before his feature film debut.

 

Synopsis: What happens when the method becomes the madness? Shakespearean actor Oliver Lawrence must defend his method amid the madness of a major blockbuster film set as a serious budget deadline looms.

Synopsis: This film chronicles the life of Luis Ruales a 65 year old shoemaker in Roselle, NJ as he works, plays, and comes to terms with his biggest challenge yet. We learn about Luis' hopes, fears, and uncertainties about retirement and the future of shoemaking in America from several points of view. Director: Matthew VanDyke - Matthew VanDyke is an American documentary filmmaker. He received his Master’s degree in Security Studies from the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service. VanDyke has been filming in North Africa, the Middle East, and Central Asia since 2007. In 2011 VanDyke was the subject of international press coverage when he fought against the regime of Muammar Gaddafi in the Libyan revolution as an American freedom fighter and soldier in the rebel army. He was captured by Gaddafi’'s forces and spent nearly 6 months as a prisoner of war in solitary confinement, before escaping from Abu Salim prison and returning to combat until the end of the war. VanDyke is a producer, cinematographer, and subject of a film about his life titled Point and Shoot, which won the Best Documentary Award at Tribeca Film Festival in 2014. His first film, Not Anymore: A Story of Revolution, was released in 2013 and has won nearly 50 awards.

 

Synopsis: A short film about the Syrian struggle for freedom as experienced by a 32 year old rebel commander, Mowya, and a 24 year old female journalist, Nour, in Aleppo, Syria. The film clearly and concisely shows why Syrians are fighting for their freedom, told through the emotional words of two powerful characters whose lives have been torn apart by war.

Director: Marta Renzi - Marta Renzi has been making dances professionally since 1976. In 1992, Marta received a New York Dance & Performance Award (a "Bessie") for her dance VITAL SIGNS, and in 1995 was the first recipient of a Dancing in the Streets award as "a fearless explorer of all manner of unconventional sites, integrating art into everyday life." Her site-specific choreography led naturally to work in video and film. In 1981, she made YOU LITTLE WILD HEART, a half-hour video dance for PBS, followed in 1989 by a second for television entitled MOUNTAINVIEW, made in collaboration with filmmaker John Sayles. Since 2005, she has self-produced several short films which have been screened nationally and internationally. In 2013 she was a Bogliasco Fellow at the Liguria Study for Arts & Humanities in Italy.

 

Synopsis: A man and a woman, dressed in funeral black, arrive at a homestead. Both are silent, bottled up, alone. They enter the barn to work through their thoughts. In the end they find their way outside - to the fields and garden, and to some kind of peace.

Director: Xavier Bonnin - Born in the South West of France, Xavier Bonnin studied Cinema at Provence University in Marseille. Several of his films have been selected and won prizes at film festivals. He has written some short stories for the Radio, and France Inter have producted three of them.  He has also made vidéo works for theater, specifically for the groupe TIM’s productions.

 

Synopsis: Simona, a woman in her forties who is presenting cheese samples in a Parisian suburbs supermarket, has a surprise. Out of nowhere, her ex-lover, Michel, is there among the clients.

Director: Paco Cavero - Paco Cavero works as an illustrator and filmmaker in Spain. He has directed six shortfilms already, such as They´ll call him Bobby or What the hell is going on?, and has won lots of international awards. That´s why I don´t have brothers its his latest work and it is begining its trip around the world. In the meantime, Paco is writing his first movie for the screen.

 

Synopsis: Antonio, forced by his wife, takes his brother in law to lake to help him to overcome a brake up. But this same day, Antonio has to assist to the bachelor´s party of a good friend. Would their happy day become a drama?

Director: Kristopher Wile - Kristopher Wile is a Los Angeles based director with experience shooting music videos, promos, and short films. He is a 2009 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he first studied History, Classics, and Creative Writing. He first attended school thinking he wanted to be Indiana Jones, but midway through his studies, he realized he didn't want to be Indiana Jones, he wanted to make Indiana Jones. It was then that he discovered the Carolina Production Guild, a student group devoted to making short films using actual film stock. Through the guild, Kristopher wrote and directed his first short film on Super 8mm and was instantly hooked. Five years later, he is currently raising money for his next short film and writing his first independent feature film to direct. 

 

Synopsis: On a perfect date, everything goes... wrong. In this off beat romantic comedy, we find Liz who is completely disillusioned by all things in the dating world agreeing to go on a date with Will who desperately wants to woo this nice, Irish girl. Barriers are put up, obstacles are torn down and room mates step in to help this comedic love story unfold.

​"As Long As You Watch My Heart" by Penny Police

Director: Jacob Anderson - Jacob L. Andersen is a recent graduate of the American Film Institute Conservatory's directing program. He also holds a degree from The European Film College (2009), located in his home country of Denmark. His career began writing and directing short films and music videos, which have gained recognition in festivals and on MTV. Since then he has worked for prominent Danish directors Thomas Vinterberg and Nikolaj Arcel, and has gained international experience filming musicians like 30 Seconds to Mars (fronted by Jared Leto), Raphael Saadiq and Enrique Iglesias on their respective world tours. He is a recipient of the Nordic Film Foundation Scholarship and the Bridges/Larson Grant for socially responsible filmmaking.

 

Description: A yarn-ball falls in love with with a cherry, but when the cherry all of the sudden drops from the tree, it forces the yarn-ball to embark on a dangerous adventure and unexpected transformation. The story plays out in magical universe populated with friendly flowers, giant whales and a menacing bird, and Orion waiting in the sky.

Director: Szonja Szabó - Freelance filmmaker. Graduate of the Hungarian Film Academy's Television director class of 2007.

 

Description: We wanted to shoot a youthful music video, which shows the characters playing in the band. With the chosen locations we wanted to create an atmosphere that fades perfectly into the personality of the band and involves the brit-pop mood, which represents the ParaFoMe's musicality. Though the music video was shot in Budapest, it could've been anywhere in an industrial part of the world. The young band's music is just as international, as the moving pictures shot to it.

Director: HB no.2 - HB no.2 is a Brooklyn based film director who lives by this credo: The greatest opportunity for balance, Film lies at the cross section of two spectrums: one between the viewer and artist, one between conviction and humility. The most inclusive find balance. The ones remembered reset the scale.

 

Description: What does it take to become a Dance Dance Revolution God? Much must be suffered, learned, and lost. Yet, as our hero fights greater odds, becomes more obsessed, he also threatens to lose the most important thing in his life, his girl. Howewer, she doesn’t go down without a fight either.

Directors: Juan Galiñanes - Juan Galiñanes began in audiovisual in 2002 with the short movie Coma Nunca (2002) as a student in Escuela de Imaxe e Son- A Coruña nominated to Maestre Mateo Awards. Since then, he was also the director of the short movie El bufón y la infanta nominated to Goya's Awards 2008 besides many national awards. Juan Galiñanes has written as well "Quien a hierro mata" a long movie script whose rights have been bought by Vaca Films production. 

Olga Osorio - Olga Osorio is a media teacher in the Image and Sound School of Cinematography and Lighting in the Faculty of Communication Sciences. Olga Osorio has an extensive career in various media as a journalist and her artistic production mainly developed in the field of photography. In the audiovisual field, she has been a nationally awarded cinematographer, producer, and director. She is also the author of several books and research papers.

 

Description: How many times do you have to cross the door of the same room to realize everything you need to leave behind to move forward? Carlos Tajes and Silvia Rábade (Escuchando Elefantes) lead us through the garden’s road in this video full of fantasy and optimism directed by Juan Galiñanes & Olga Osorio.

Director: Federico Alotto - A graduate from the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory in Turin, trumpeteer and orchestra director. In 2007 he collaborated with Baustelle for the recording of their album Amen. He has worked as an instrumentalist with Elio (from Storie Tese) and Ossi Duri. He collaborates with the orchestra of the CRT Foundation Musical Talents. He participated in the concert / master of two lakes with Tom Harrel. In November 2012 he was under the direction of Riccardo Muti for his honorary degree. L’uomo col cappello (2012 long 80’ – “Jury honorable mention” EIFF - 2013) I see monsters (2013 short 19’ – 24 Film Festivals official selections and Awards in 2014 including “Best Foreign Film and best Actor At Beverly Hills Film Festival”, “Best Horror Short” Winter Film Awards NY , "Best Director at Fabriano Film Festival).

 

Description: Heavy Dente (in English "Heavy Trooth") is a song composed and played by a young italian rock band: Ossi Duri. It's a story of a funny guy with a huge tooth. He always tells about his incredible adventure but people don't know if they're true or false. The solution it's hevident: Heavy Trooth tells no truth!
